Pirate Parties International (PPI) is the world association of pirate parties . The international non-governmental organization emerged in 2006 as a loose union of the pirate parties that were emerging at the time. The PPI was officially founded in April 2010 . It currently has 38 member parties (as of June 2019).

Task and structure

PP International supports and coordinates the start-up plans of pirate parties worldwide. It is also used for internal communication . To this end, it operates international forums and mailing lists .

The organization is led by the PPI Board, consisting of the chairman, the vice chairman, the treasurer, the general secretary and three other members.

history

After the founding of Piratpartiet in Sweden on 1 January 2006 more pirate parties emerged throughout Europe, and later worldwide. In the same year, these parties were loosely networked. In June 2007, representatives of the pirate parties of Sweden, the Netherlands , Austria , Germany , Poland , Spain , Ireland , Denmark and Finland met for the first time for an international conference in Vienna . Further conferences followed in Berlin and Uppsala in 2008 . In Uppsala, Andrew Norton (USA) was elected PPI coordinator and the Uppsala Declaration was adopted.

In early 2009 they met in Helsinki and in August 2009 was a Core Team (Core Team) led by Patrick Mächler (Switzerland) and Samir Allioui installed (Netherlands). Since October 2009 the PPI has had the status of a non-governmental organization (Feitelijke vereniging) based in Belgium .

The official constitution of the PPI, in which 22 national pirate parties took part, finally took place at a conference in Brussels from April 16 to 18, 2010 . The federal party conference of the German Pirate Party from May 15 to 16, 2010 in Bingen am Rhein officially confirmed the German party's accession. The first official general assembly of the PPI took place on March 12 and 13, 2011 in Friedrichshafen . The second general assembly was held in Prague on April 14th and 15th, 2012 . The third General Assembly took place on April 20 and 21, 2013 in Kazan . In 2017 she was granted advisory status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council . She is the patron of the Pirate Security Conference, which has been taking place in Munich since 2015 .

Exits

In February 2015, Pirate Party Australia terminated its membership from the PPI due to a serious disagreement with the direction and management of the organization. In the same month the Pirate Party UK also resigned , and in March the Belgian Pirate Party suspended its membership from the PPI.

On April 20, 2015, the Pirate Party of Iceland voted with an overwhelming majority for PPI to leave. A member of the executive, Arnaldur Sigurðarson, reported 96.56% of the vote in favor of the exit, adding: "The PPI has been pretty useless when it comes to aims to promote international cooperation between pirate parties."

In May 2015 the Swedish Pirate Party decided by a large majority to leave the PPI and terminate its observer status.

Members

According to the statutes, only parties with a modification of the word “pirates” in their name could join, the regulation was changed to allow other parties such as the Internet party New Zealand to join. In principle, only one party per country can become a member with voting rights; if another party is added, the votes are divided. Other organizations can become observing members. Individual sponsoring membership is possible.
