Marcel Kolaja (born June 29, 1980 in Moravská Třebová ) is a Czech politician of the Česká pirátská strana . He won a mandate in the 2019 European elections and has been a member of the ninth European Parliament as part of the Greens / EFA group since then . The Parliament also elected him one of the 14 Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament.

Life

education

Marcel Kolaja studied computer science at Masaryk University in Brno . During his studies he was particularly interested in Free Software and was particularly involved in the Czech localization of numerous applications. As a board member of the Association of Czech Linux Users, he campaigned against the introduction of software patents in the European Union. After his studies he stayed in Brno and worked as a product manager for the Czech branch of the software company Red Hat .

Kolaja joined the Party of Czech Pirates ( Česká pirátská strana ) in 2010 and began to get involved in politics. From March 2011 to November 2011 he headed the international association of pirate parties , Pirate Parties International, alongside the Dutchman Samir Allioui . From August 2012 to May 2013 he was an assessor on the board of the Czech Pirate Party.

For the European elections in 2014 , the party nominated him for second place on the list. However, the party only won 4.78 percent and thus did not exceed the necessary threshold of five percent.

For the 2019 European elections , Kolaja ran for first place on the list and prevailed in the internal party pre-election process. In the election, the Pirate Party was able to win significantly more votes than in 2014: With 13.95 percent of the vote, the party won three of the 21 Czech mandates. Together with Markéta Gregorová and Mikuláš Peksa , Kolaja joined the Greens / EFA group after lengthy negotiations . Also up for discussion was joining the ALDE parliamentary group (now Renew Europe ), although the pirates refused to be in a parliamentary group with the Czech ruling party ANO .

In the constituent session, the European Parliament elected Kolaja as one of the 14 Vice-Presidents of Parliament. This means that he is a member of the Presidium of the European Parliament for his group, he is also a member of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection and a deputy member of the Committee on Culture and Education .
