The left-green movement ( isl. Vinstrihreyfingin - grænt framboð , dt. Literally left-wing movement - green candidacy ) is a political party in Iceland .
history
The party was founded in 1999 when some members of the Icelandic parliament Althing disagreed with the merger of several left-wing parties into an alliance . They split off and started the movement.
In the parliamentary elections in 2007 , the party achieved a significant increase in votes compared to the previous elections and was 14.3 percent of the vote. With 9 seats in parliament, it was the strongest opposition party. After the resignation of the government of Geir Haarde , she entered a minority government with the Alliance under Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir . After the early parliamentary election in April 2009 , the party formed a coalition with Allianz; she provided four ministers in the government of Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir II . In the 2013 parliamentary elections , the left-green movement suffered heavy losses and went into opposition . In the parliamentary elections in 2016 and 2017 , the party won back ground and provides since November 2017 katrín jakobsdóttir in a coalition with the Independence Party and the Progressive Party , the Prime Minister .
Political positions
The main focus of the party is environmental protection , social affairs and equality . The party also wants to strengthen direct democracy in Iceland. A Iceland's accession to the European Union rejects the party, it is also against the commitment to NATO .
Chairperson
Steingrímur J. Sigfússon was Chairman 1999-2013. Katrín Jakobsdóttir has been the party’s chairman since February 2013 . Svandís Svavarsdóttir has been chairman of the left-green movement in the Althing since 2013 .
