Katrín Jakobsdóttir
Katrín Jakobsdóttir ([ ˈkʰaːtʰrin ˈjaːkʰɔpsˌtouhtɪr̥ ]; born February 1, 1976 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic politician ( left-green movement ) and since November 2017 Prime Minister of Iceland. She was Minister for Education, Science and Culture from February 2009 to May 2013 and has been the chairwoman of the Left-Green movement since February 2013 .
Life
Katrín Jakobsdóttir completed her studies in Icelandic and French in 1999 . In 2004 she received at the University of Iceland the Master of Arts in Icelandic literature with a thesis on the popular Icelandic crime writer Arnaldur Indriðason .
She has been a member of the Icelandic parliament for the constituency of Reykjavík North since 2007 . On February 1, 2009, she became Minister for Education, Science and Culture and Minister for Nordic Cooperation in the Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir I government . She remained in office after the April 2009 elections as a member of the government of Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir II . Her successor as Minister of Education was from May 23, 2013 Illugi Gunnarsson in the cabinet of Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson .
From 2002 to 2003 she was chairwoman of the Young Left-Green Party and from 2003 to 2013 deputy party chairman. She has held the party chairmanship since 2013.
After the general election in Iceland in 2017 , the left-green movement became the second strongest force with almost 17 percent of the vote. Since the independence party with the strongest vote could not find a partner for coalition negotiations, Katrín Jakobsdóttir was commissioned to form a government. In a government alliance with the Independence Party and the Progress Party , she is Prime Minister of the Katrín Jakobsdóttir cabinet .
Family and personal
Katrín Jakobsdóttir's father Jakob Ármannsson was a banker and teacher. Her mother, the psychologist Signý Thoroddsen, was the daughter of the Althing MP Sigurður S. Thoroddsen . Katrin Jakobsdóttir is married and has three sons (born in 2005, 2007 and 2011).
