Þorsteinn Pálsson

Þorsteinn Pálsson (German transcription Thorsteinn Palsson , born October 29, 1947 in Selfoss ) is an Icelandic politician . As a member of the Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn) he was Prime Minister of Iceland from 1987 to 1988 . He has been a member of the Viðreisn party since 2016 .

biography

Þorsteinn Pálsson began his political career in 1983 when he was elected member of the Icelandic parliament Althing , in which he represented the interests of southern Iceland until 1999. In the same year he was elected chairman of the Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn). In 1985 he was appointed Minister of Finance by then Prime Minister Steingrímur Hermannsson .

On July 8, 1987, he succeeded Steingrímur Hermannsson as Prime Minister of Iceland. However, he only held this office for a little over a year until September 28, 1988, when he resigned due to an economic crisis , and was then replaced again by Steingrímur.

In 1991 he was defeated at a party congress of the Independence Party to the previous deputy chairman and mayor of Reykjavík , Davíð Oddsson , in the re-election as party chairman. When he succeeded Steingrímur as Prime Minister on April 30, 1991, he appointed Þorsteinn as Minister of Fisheries and Minister of Justice and Church Affairs. During his tenure as Minister of Justice, on June 27, 1996, he introduced a partnership law for lesbians and gays into the Althing. 44 MPs voted in favor, only one against the law. When he resigned on May 11, 1999 after eight years in office, Prime Minister Davíð Oddson took over these offices for a short time.

Þorsteinn Pálsson was later appointed ambassador to London and then to Copenhagen . In 2006 he became editor of the largest daily newspaper in Iceland, Fréttablaðið .

In 2016 he joined the newly formed liberal Viðreisn party .
