history
The Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture was created after a change in the law passed on June 13, 2007 by the Icelandic parliament Althing . On June 25, the law was signed by President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson . On January 1, 2008, it combined the two previous independent ministries, the Ministry of Fisheries and the Ministry of Agriculture. Sigurgeir Þorgeirsson was appointed Permanent Secretary of State of the Ministry.
In the cabinet of Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson , Fisheries and Agriculture Minister Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson had been Minister of the Environment since May 23, 2013 , but the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources ( Umhverfis- og auðlindaráðuneytið ) was taken over by Sigrún Magnúsdóttir on December 31, 2014 . After Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson took over the post of Prime Minister on April 7, 2016, following the resignation of Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, for the transition period until the early parliamentary elections on October 29, 2016 , Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson (Progress Party) became Minister for Fisheries and Agriculture appointed. His successor in the cabinet Bjarni Benediktsson (2017) has been Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir from the Viðreisn party since January 11, 2017 .
