Although the Independence Party, of which she was a member, opposed Iceland joining the EU , she said in an interview in 2008 that in times of financial crisis, Iceland would have no choice but to join the EU.

Viðreisn is no longer involved in the new government coalition , which started work on November 30, 2017 after the early election of October 28, 2017 , which means that Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir has already lost her ministry again.
