Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson (born June 9, 1968 in Sauðárkrókur ) is an Icelandic politician of the Center Party . Until September 2017 he was a member of the Progress Party .

He studied sociology of work at the University of Iceland . Since 2009 he has been a member of the Icelandic parliament Althing for the Northwestern constituency . From 2009 to 2013 Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson was group leader of the Progress Party. He was a member of the parliamentary committees on trade (2009–2011) and foreign affairs (2011–2013). From 2011 to 2013 he was also a member of the Special Committee on Parliament's Rules of Procedure.

Since May 23, 2013 Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson was Foreign Minister in the cabinet of Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson . In Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson's cabinet , which was confirmed by the Icelandic President on April 7, 2016, he had taken over the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture . Lilja Dögg Alfreðsdóttir became the new foreign minister . The Progress Party was not involved in Bjarni Benediktsson's ruling coalition , which was set up on January 11, 2017, which means that Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson is no longer a member of the government. His successor as Minister for Fisheries and Agriculture was Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir from the Viðreisn party .

At the end of September 2017, Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson left the Progress Party and joined the Center Party (Miðflokkurinn) , which was founded as a split from the Progress Party before the 2017 parliamentary elections .

As a result of the Klaustur affair at the end of November 2018, Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson took an unpaid leave of absence from the Althing until further notice; in the meantime officiated Una María Óskarsdóttir as a replacement. Gunnar Bragi returned to parliament on January 24, 2019.
