Stefán Jóhann Stefánsson

Stefán Yaldi Jóhann Stefánsson (born July 20, 1894 on Eyjafjörður ; † October 20, 1980 ) was an Icelandic politician of the Social Democratic Party of Iceland and Prime Minister of Iceland .

He was first elected as a member of the Althing in 1934 , but was not re-elected in 1937. He then had a seat in the Icelandic parliament from 1942 to 1953. From 1938 to 1952 he was the chairman of the Social Democratic Party ( Alþýðuflokkurinn ). From November 18, 1941 to January 17, 1942 he was Iceland's Foreign Minister .

From February 4, 1947 to December 6, 1949 he was the second Icelandic Prime Minister of the Republic of Iceland. His predecessor and successor in this office was Ólafur Thors of the Independence Party ( Sjálfstæðisflokkur ).

From 1957 to 1965 Stefán Jóhann Stefánsson was the Icelandic ambassador to Denmark .
