Guðmundur Í. Guðmundsson
Guðmundur Ívarsson Guðmundsson (German transcription Gudmundur Ivarsson Gudmundsson ; born July 17, 1909 in Hafnarfjörður ; † December 19, 1987 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic politician ( Social Democratic Party of Iceland ) and diplomat. From 1956 to 1965 he was Icelandic foreign minister , 1958 and 1959 also finance minister , then Icelandic ambassador in several countries.
Life
Guðmundur Í. Guðmundsson was born in Hafnarfjörður as the son of the captain Guðmundur Magnússon and his wife Margrét Guðmundsdottir. After completing his law degree at the University of Iceland in 1934, he worked in a law firm, since 1936 as a partner. In 1939 he was admitted to the bar at the Hæstiréttur Supreme Court . From 1942 to 1949 and from 1952 to 1965 he was a member of the Icelandic parliament Althing as a representative of the then Social Democratic Party of Iceland . 1945 Guðmundur became the highest administrative officials ( Sýslumaður ) of the then district Gullbringu- og Kjosarsysla appointed. He held this office nominally until 1965, but only held it until he was appointed Icelandic Foreign Minister in the Hermann Jónasson V cabinet on July 24, 1956 . With an interruption from August to October 1956, he initially held this office until the 4th or as an executive until December 28, 1958. Immediately afterwards he was again appointed Foreign Minister and Finance Minister in the Emil Jónsson cabinet ; he held both offices until November 1959. Until August 31, 1965 he continued to be Foreign Minister in the cabinets of Ólafur Thors V and Bjarni Benediktsson .
He then worked as the Icelandic ambassador in the following countries until 1979 :
- 1965–1971 in the United Kingdom with headquarters in London , at the same time for Spain and Portugal and 1971 also for Nigeria .
- 1971–1973 in the United States , also for Argentina , Brazil , Canada , Mexico and Cuba .
- 1973–1977 in Sweden with headquarters in Stockholm , also for Finland and Austria .
- 1977–1979 in Belgium and Luxembourg , Icelandic envoy to the EEC and NATO .
From 1954 to 1965 he was deputy chairman of the Social Democratic Party.
