Jón Magnússon

Jón Magnússon (born January 16, 1859 in Múli, Aðaldalur ; † June 23, 1926 in Nes, Norðfjörður ) was an Icelandic politician and two-time Justice and Prime Minister of Iceland.

Life

Jón was the first prime minister of an independent state Iceland, which separated from Denmark with the treaty of December 1, 1918 , but was subordinate to a common king ( Christian X. ).

With his first term of office, which lasted from January 4, 1917 to March 7, 1922, he replaced the last Prime Minister, who had led the office completely during the time of self-government, Einar Arnórsson , and was also Minister of Justice. He held both offices as a member of the Heimastjórnarflokkurinn party (self-government party) until he was replaced by Sigurður Eggerz . Members of the self-government party founded the Borgaraflokkurinn (Citizens' Party) in 1923 with the faction of what was then the first independence party ( Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn ); The Conservative Party Íhaldsflokkurinn emerged from the majority of the Citizens' Party in 1924 , while a minority founded the first Liberal Party of Iceland , which existed from 1926 to 1929 . In 1929 the Conservative Party and the Liberal Party merged to form today's Independence Party .

His second term as Prime Minister and Justice Minister had Jón as Sigurður Eggerz 'successor between March 22, 1924 and June 23, 1926 as a member of the Conservative Party. He was succeeded in both offices by Magnús Guðmundsson .

Jón was married to Þóra Jónsdóttir.
