Tommy Makem
Tommy Makem (born November 4, 1932 in Keady , County Armagh , Northern Ireland , † August 1, 2007 in Dover , New Hampshire , United States ) was a Northern Irish singer and musician . Tommy Makem was one of the most famous musicians of traditional Irish folk , especially in the USA .
He emigrated to the United States in the 1950s and played for the Clancy Brothers . They played in sold out concerts, including in New York's Carnegie Hall . Makem and Joan Baez were hailed as the newcomers to the American folk scene at the Newport Folk Festival in 1961 . In 1969 Makem left the Clancy Brothers and tried a solo career; a short time later he appeared together with Liam Clancy as Makem and Clancy . From 1988 he played alone again.
Tommy Makem died on August 1, 2007 after a long illness of complications from lung cancer .
