Kristján Þór Júlíusson (German transcription Kristjan Thor Juliusson , born July 15, 1957 in Akureyri ) is an Icelandic politician of the Independence Party . Since 2007 he has been a member of the Icelandic parliament Althing . He has been Minister of Health since 2013, initially in the Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson cabinet , from April 2016 in the Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson cabinet . In the Bjarni Benediktsson cabinet (2017) he moved to the Ministry of Education and Culture, after the early election in 2017 he became Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture in the Katrín Jakobsdóttir cabinet .

In 1986 Kristján Þór Júlíusson became mayor of Dalvík , where he grew up, and remained in that position until 1994 when he moved to Ísafjörður . In Ísafjörður he then also served as mayor, this until 1997, and then from 1998 to 2007 in Akureyri. He is credited with the increasing success of the Independence Party in Akureyri, where the Progressive Party dominated for decades. From 1998 to 2006 Kristján headed a coalition of the Independence Party and the Progress Party, but the Independence Party then formed a coalition with the Alliance . In 2007 he resigned as mayor of Akureyri and successfully ran for a seat in the Althing.
