Arthur O'Hara Wood

Arthur O'Hara Wood (* 1890 in Melbourne , † October 6, 1918 via Saint-Quentin , France ) was an Australian tennis player .

Arthur O'Hara Wood was the older of two tennis-playing brothers who grew up in a sports-loving family. His younger brother is Pat O'Hara Wood (1891–1961). Her father, John James O'Hara Wood, was a lawyer and encouraged the brothers to play tennis. Both became good players and won several singles titles at the Australian Tennis Championships. In 1914 he won the Australian Tennis Championships . In the final he defeated his compatriot Gerald Patterson in three sets (6: 4, 6: 3, 5: 7, 6: 1). In the doubles competition that year he and his partner Rodney Heath lost to Ashley Campbell and Gerald Patterson 7: 5, 3: 6, 6: 3, 6: 3. Arthur served in the Royal Air Force in Europe during World War I. He was shot down over Saint-Quentin in France in early October 1918 and died. His brother Pat returned to Australia after serving in the Australian army units in Europe and was able to continue his successful tennis career.
