Illugi Gunnarsson (born August 26, 1967 in Siglufjörður ) is an Icelandic politician ( Independence Party ) and was Minister for Education, Science and Culture from 2013 to 2016.

He graduated from Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík in 1987 and thus obtained his university entrance qualification. He then studied economics and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Iceland in 1995 and an MBA from the London Business School in 2000 .

Since 2007 he has been a member of the Icelandic parliament Althing , 2007-2009 for the constituency of Reykjavík-South and since 2009 for the constituency of Reykjavík-North . He was chairman of the parliamentary group of the Independence Party and chairman of the Icelandic delegation to the Nordic Council . After the parliamentary elections in Iceland in 2013 , he became Minister for Education, Science and Culture in the cabinet of Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson on May 23, 2013 .

Illugi Gunnarsson has declared that he will not run for the general election in Iceland in 2016 and intends to withdraw from politics for the time being.
