The Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík (abbreviation MR ) is the oldest grammar school ( Isl. Menntaskólinn ) in Iceland . It goes back to a school founded in 1056 at the bishopric in Skálholt , which was relocated to the Icelandic capital Reykjavík in 1786 .
history
Shortly after the founding of the Skálholt bishopric west of Reykjavík in 1056, the Skálholtsskóli Latin School was established at the same location . This makes this school not only one of the oldest educational institutions in Iceland, but also one of the oldest continuously existing organizations. In 1786 the school was moved to the capital Reykjavík , a few years before the rest of the bishopric. As early as 1805, however, the school had to move to Bessastaðir in the municipality of Álftanes , the current seat of the President of Iceland .
In 1846 the school was moved back to Reykjavík, in what was then the largest building in Iceland, which is shown on the 500 kroner banknote. In addition to the old main building, around ten other buildings are used as a library, for teaching and to accommodate the students.
In the course of time, the school's names were first Skálholtsskóli , later Lærðiskólinn , Latínuskólinn (Latin School) or in Latin Scholae Reykjavicensis . The current name Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík has existed since 1937.
The school now offers a four-year teaching program. The university entrance qualification (isl. Stúdentspróf ) is at the end of it .
