Tómas Guðmundsson (born January 6, 1901 on the farm Efri-Brú in Grímsnes , Iceland , † November 14, 1983 in Reykjavík , Iceland) was an Icelandic writer .

Life

The writer Tómas Guðmundsson was born in 1901 on the wealthy Efri-Brú farm in southern Iceland, not far from the place where another writer, Ólafur Jóhann Sigurðsson , would grow up some 20 years later . Tómas' parents were Guðmundur Ögmundsson and his wife Steinunn Þorsteinsdóttir.

Since the boy showed good disposition early on, it was decided that he should go to high school. He went to the Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík , graduated from high school in 1921 and then enrolled at the Háskóli Íslands in law. He finished his law studies in 1926 with the final exam. He then worked for several years as a lawyer in law firms and at Hagstofa Íslands , the Icelandic statistical office.

From 1943 he only lived as a writer.

Tómas Guðmundsson died in Reykjavík in 1983. Two monuments commemorate him, one in Austurstræti in Iceland's capital, a street that stars in one of his poems, another on the bank of the Sog River , where he was born.

Works

Tómas Guðmundsson published mainly poetry, but also plays. He also worked as a literary translator, editor and publisher.

His first volume of poetry, Við sundin blá , appeared in 1925. This was followed by numerous others. But he also published articles in newspapers and magazines. Many of Tómas Guðmundsson's poems are characterized by restrained aesthetics and a gentle sense of humor. One of his favorite subjects is the city of Reykjavík (see the aforementioned Austurstræti poem ).

Several of his poems have also been set to music and are now popular songs such as B. Hótel Jörð .

The city of Reykjavík awards a literary prize in memory of Tómas Guðmundsson.
