The University of Iceland ( Icelandic Háskóli Íslands , HÍ for short ) in Reykjavík is the oldest university in Iceland and was founded on June 17, 1911. Its first dean was Björn Magnússon Ólsen . It also has the largest range of courses in Iceland, specializing in humanities , economics , engineering , law , medicine , pharmacy , nursing , natural and social sciences , odontology and theology .
offer
The majority of courses offered at the University of Iceland are held in Icelandic. However, there are also some courses taught in English as the University of Iceland also accepts Erasmus students . There is also the interdisciplinary study program Environmental and Natural Resources , the compulsory subjects of which are taught in English. For non-Icelandic students wishing to study the Icelandic language, the Faculty of Humanities offers a BA course called Icelandic for Foreigners . For the following academic year, March 15th is always the enrollment date. A three-year BA course consists of three önn (from the Latin annus ) of two misseri (semesters), the haustmisseri (autumn, September to December) and the following vormisseri (spring, January to May). For historical reasons, the summer months are free of study. Usually the fee is charged for one year. In addition, the university has a rarity for funding: the university lottery.
In addition to the university formalities, requirements from the immigration authorities must be observed. They concern the cost of living as well as a residence permit or work permit.
Since Iceland developed away from an agricultural and fishing nation towards a knowledge society, the number of students has risen to almost 15,000. The current university management under Kristín Ingólfsdóttir is pursuing the vision of making the University of Iceland one of the hundred best universities in the world. This raises a housing problem for guests, as does the fact that the university has moved from the outskirts to the city center since it was founded. Although student dormitories are operated and there are also rooms for rent in the area, this massive increase in students and tenants led to an increase in rents.
Since 1983 the university has also operated the Endurmenntun Háskóla Íslands (EHÍ) training institute .
In 2011, the Times Higher Education Ranking listed the University of Iceland, an Icelandic university, in the global university ranking for the first time.

In 2008 the University of Iceland was restructured based on the Anglo-American model. The structure follows the principle of the school-faculty-institute; five different schools were created .
