Björn Magnússon Ólsen

Björn Magnússon Ólsen (born July 14, 1850 in Þingeyrar ; † January 16, 1919 ) was an Icelandic philologist .

Life

Björn M.Ólsen was the son of the monastery ruler Runólfur Magnús Ólsen and his wife Ingunn Jónsdóttir Ólsen. He began to study in Reykjavik in 1869 and, for health reasons, moved to the University of Copenhagen in 1872, where he obtained his philological and historical diploma in 1877. In 1878 he made a trip to Greece and Italy with public support. In 1883 he received his doctorate in Copenhagen with the font Runerne i den oldislandske literature and initially worked as a teacher at the Latin school in Reykjavík . After the University of Iceland was founded in Reykjavík, he became its first rector in 1911 and held a chair in Icelandic philology and cultural history. Björn M. Ólsen tried to achieve that the Icelandic orthography would be more adapted to the pronunciation, for example y would be given up in favor of i and ý in favor of í.

He has written articles such as the essay Om Are Frode for Aarbøger for nordisk oldkyndighed og historie or the journal Arkiv för nordisk filologi but also texts on New Icelandic grammar in Germania.
