Þórarinn Eldjárn (born August 22, 1949 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic writer .

Life

He studied Icelandic , literature and philosophy in Sweden and Iceland . He has been working as a writer and translator since 1975 and is one of the best-known authors in Iceland , primarily because of his efforts to develop the short story in Icelandic. His work is extensive, ranging from novels and short stories to poems , anecdotes , aphorisms and children's books. His best-known work, The Blue Tower , was for the 2001 IMPAC Literature Prizenominated in Dublin. In 2008 the Icelandic publisher Vaka-Helgafell published its complete collection of poems, which became an instant bestseller.

His father was Kristján Eldjárn , the third president of Iceland. His son Halldór is a founding member of the band Sykur . The author lives in Reykjavík .
