List of central banks

The Icelandic Central Bank ( isl . Seðlabanki Íslands , German "Icelandic Central Bank") is the central bank of the State of Iceland .

In 1961, following a resolution by the Icelandic parliament Al nachingi, it was spun off from the Landsbanki , which until then had been responsible for issuing notes, but only performed a few tasks in the context of monetary policy.

The central bank is owned by the Icelandic state and is run by a committee of three governors appointed by the prime minister for a seven-year term. They are monitored by a seven-member supervisory board. The Central Bank has the sole right to banknotes and coins of the Icelandic krona to print or emboss and output. In 1986 the central bank lost the legal right to control the interest rate of Icelandic banks.

Although legally independent, the bank has traditionally been expected to follow the course of the government. In 2001 the central bank was given the right to influence inflation independently of government guidelines and to pursue a monetary policy aimed at maintaining stable price developments. The current president of the Icelandic central bank is Már Guðmundsson , who replaced the interim president Svein Harald Øygard on August 20, 2009 .

Until the law was changed in 2009, there was a three-person management body made up of so-called governors.
