Svein Harald Øygard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Svein Harald Øygard (born June 29, 1960 ) is a Norwegian economist and former interim president of the Central Bank of Iceland ( Seðlabanki Íslands ).

Life

Øygard trained in economics at the University of Oslo . From 1983 to 1990 he worked for the central bank of Norway, Norges Bank . From 1990 to 1994 he then worked as State Secretary in the Norwegian Ministry of Finance . As a result, he became involved in the business consultancy McKinsey from 1995 and held a managerial position in their Oslo office. Through the mediation of the Norwegian Finance Minister Kristin Halvorsen in conjunction with the Icelandic Finance Minister Steingrimur Sigfússon , Øygard became interim president of the Icelandic central bank on February 27, 2009. In order for Øygard to even start his new job, Iceland's central bank law had to be changed, as two of the three previous governors refused to voluntarily resign from their posts. The law was changed on February 26, 2009. The predecessor Oddsson made no secret of his contempt and contempt for Øygard. He even avoided mentioning Øygard's name at all, saying "that man" or "the provisional bank chairman" instead.

After only six months, in August 2009, Øygard handed over his post to the Icelandic economist Már Guðmundsson , as it was planned from the outset that an Icelandic citizen would run the central bank in the long term.
