Davíð Stefánsson , also Davíð Stefánsson frá Fagraskógi , (born January 21, 1895 in Fagriskógur on Eyjafjörður ; † March 1, 1964 in Möðruvellir (Hörgárdalur) ) was a very influential writer in Iceland . His most famous works are the volume of poetry Svartar fjaðrir and the play Gullna hliðið, which is often performed in Iceland .

Life

Davíð was born on the farm Fagriskógur on Eyjafjörður on January 21, 1895. Hence he also got his nickname Davið Stefánsson frá Fagraskógi .

His parents were Stefán Baldvin Stefánsson , farmer and later a member of parliament, and Ragnheiður Davíðsdóttir from Hof im Hörgárdal .

Davíð graduated from the school Gagnfræðaskólinn á Akureyri in 1911 with the final exam. He spent the years 1915–1916 in Copenhagen and there he began to write and publish. Later he also went to the Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík high school and graduated from high school in 1919. In the same year his first volume of poetry was published with the title Svartar fjaðrir .

Davíð Stefánsson always spent time abroad, e.g. B. 1920 in Italy and 1923 in Norway. From 1925 he took a position as a librarian in the official library in Akureyri, which he would hold until 1951.

He lived in Akureyri until his death, where he died on March 1, 1964. He is buried with his family in Möðruvellir .

Individualist and neo-romantic

Davíð Stefánsson was in many ways a typical poet of Neo-Romanticism , although it should be noted that literary trends in Iceland often arrived later and lasted longer than in other European countries. He concentrated more on the inner workings of the individual than on the human environment. His poetry is characterized by the expression of strong feelings and antagonisms . A strong sense of nationality, hero worship, aestheticism and freedom-thinking are formative elements of his texts.

His last poems appeared posthumously in 1966.

Prices

The Icelandic Writers' Association awarded the Davíðspenninn writer's prize annually in the years 1991-2000 in memory of Davíð Stefánsson, who in 1945 was one of the founders of the association.

museum

In Akureyri , his former home ( Davíðshús ) has been converted into a museum. There is also a poet's apartment in it. The house is not far from the Nonnahús.
