Höfuðborgarsvæðið
Höfuðborgarsvæðið ( dt. Literally capital area or the metropolitan area ) is one of the eight regions Islands , and also one of the two NUTS 3 regions .
The capital area is located in the southwest of Iceland. It essentially includes the capital Reykjavík and its suburbs. The area around Reykjavík is very densely populated by Icelandic standards and on January 1, 2019 the area had a total of 228,231 inhabitants, which corresponds to about 60% of the population of the entire country. Höfuðborgarsvæðið covers an area of 1,042 km², resulting in a population density of about 219 inhabitants per square kilometer.
The cooperation association SSH (isl: Samtök Sveitarfélaga á Höfuðborgarsvæðinu (SSH) , English Association of municipalities in the greater Reykjavík area ) founded in 1976 is referred to as a collective body of the municipalities; however, it is only a loose collaboration for practical reasons. The communities remain independent and autonomous.
Therefore, the term "region" is a bit misleading here. Höfuðborgarsvæðið is not defined by law and the term has primarily a meaning for statistics. As the translation as “capital area” suggests, it is more of an area, a zone with limited cooperation in certain areas. In no case is it an administrative region of the type found in Belgium, for example.
According to the general meeting of November 2011, the SSH association consists of the following members: Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær, Álftanes, Kópavogur, Reykjavík, Seltjarnarnes, Mosfellsbær and Kjósarhreppur.
The municipalities of the capital area have in recent times expanded their cooperation in some areas such as waste management, public transport or the fire service. Since 2007 there has also been a joint police force for all municipalities in the area.
The SSH administrative office ( Skrifstofa ) is located in Kópavogur .
