Mosfellsbær ([ 'mɔːsfɛlsˌpaiˑr ], coll. Often Mosó [ ' mɔːsou ]) is an Icelandic community in the Höfuðborgarsvæðið region , about 17 km north of the Icelandic capital Reykjavík . On January 1, 2019, the community had 11,463 inhabitants.
geography
The mountain Helgafell is to the east of the main town .
From here, hot water is pumped into the capital from more than 100 boreholes. To the south of the main town is the Úlfarsfell pelagonite ridge , and a little further east is the Hafravatn lake . Lake Leirvogsvatn lies to the east of the municipality .
Culture and sights
The most famous citizen of the place was the poet Halldór Laxness , who grew up on the Laxnes farm, which is still known today as the horse farm. In later years he lived here in the Gljúfrasteinn house . This house has been passed over to the state and now serves as a museum about his life and work as well as a house of literature. The Sunday Advent readings at which the most famous writers in the country present their latest works are particularly popular.
In 2008 an old Viking homestead , the longhouse of Hrísbrú , was excavated in the municipality . At the same time, excavations took place at the Mosfellsbær ship settlement .
The saga reports that Egill Skallagrímsson , who reached old age, last lived with his niece Þórdís, the daughter of his brother Þórólfur and her husband Grim in or near Mosfellsbær.

In Mosfellsbær, the Þingvallavegur branches off into the Þingvellir National Park . The city is located on the Hringvegur , the number 1 ring road that goes around the entire island.
