The Þingvallavegur (German transcription : Thingvallavegur ) is a main road between the south and west of Iceland .
The road branches north from Biskupstungnabraut and initially runs in this direction towards the 764 m high Ármannsfell . It runs east of the lake Álftavatn and the river Sog and the lakes Úlfljótsvatn and Þingvallavatn . Finally it flows into the Lyngdalsheiðarvegur , which leads from Þingvellir to the geyser at Gullni hringurinn . The speed limit in Þingvellir National Park is 50 km / h. Since April 2019, the Þingvallavegur has been renewed with a full closure in this area. The diversion takes place via the Vallavegur . There is an intersection at the National Park Tourist Information Center. From the south the Vallavegur meets the Þingvallavegur again and the Kaldadalsvegur branches off to the north .
The road has reached its northernmost point here and now runs in a south-westerly direction. The river Öxará plunges over the Öxarárfoss into the Almannagjá. The Haksvegur branches off to the east to the tourist center on the Almannagjá. The Grafningsvegur efri leads to Nesjavellir and the geothermal power plant there. At the junction of Kjósarskarðsvegurs to Hvalfjörður there is a station for traffic and weather monitoring from Vegagerðin. Here on the Mosfellsheiði the Þingvallavegur reaches its highest point with 260 m. The Bugða is a tributary to the Leirvogsvatn lake, whose outflow is the Leirvogsá with its waterfalls. In front of the bridge over the Kaldakvísl is the Gljúfrasteinn house where Halldór Laxness lived. Now as Hús skáldsins ( poet's house ) it is a laxness museum. The Þingvallavegur joins the ring road north of Mosfellsbær at a roundabout at Mount Helgafell .
