The Dorfkirche Wetzenow is a church in the Wetzenow district of the Rossow municipality , in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

Parish

Wetzenow is one of eleven parishes of the Zerrenthin village church in the Protestant parish of Zerrenthin and until 1974 belonged to the Brüssow parish of the Mark Brandenburg ecclesiastical province or the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg and then to the Pasewalk parish of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church . Since May 2012 it has been part of the Pasewalk Propstei in the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District of the Sprengel Mecklenburg and Pomerania (seat of the Sprengel Bishop in Greifswald) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany . Catholic church members who live in Rossow are integrated into the parish of St. Otto Pasewalk-Strasburg-Viereck, which is part of the Deanery of Western Pomerania in the Archdiocese of Berlin .

History, building description and equipment

The Wetzenow church is a small, plastered hall building from the 16th century with a drawn-in northeast corner. The walls of the hall are made of various building materials, while the gables are made of half-timbered buildings from 1672. The church tower on the west side consists in the substructure of a fieldstone wall that was built during the construction period and in the upper structure , which was also built in 1672, of a boarded, sloped upper floor with a slate-roofed pointed helmet , which could possibly come from another church. The windows of the hall building on the east side are segmental arched windows with stepped bezels and corner rustics, on the north side pointed arch windows in niches and rectangular windows also with bezels. The churchyard is surrounded by a dry stone wall. The Wetzenow church threatened to collapse and in 1996 there was a risk of collapse. In the meantime, the church has been largely renovated through private donations and with the help of the state preservation authorities and the German Foundation for Monument Protection , so that the re-inauguration could take place in 2000. Today the Wetzenow Church is a popular excursion destination for special church services of the parish of Zerrenthin.

The interior has a flat ceiling with ornaments and biblical motifs, which was probably made in 1905 by Erich Kistenmacher from Berlin. The small, colored altarpiece in Renaissance forms from the 17th century is probably composed of the remains of a larger altar and shows a communion relief between two columns and Christ as the judge of the world on the top. The altar enclosure, on the other hand, dates from the 19th century, as do the stalls and the gallery, while the pulpit with rear wall and sound cover was probably made around 1800. A carved figure of John the Baptist also in the church dates back to the first half of the 16th century and was probably part of another altar, but the cabinet disc showing the crucifixion was not made until after 1690. Several death wreath consoles date from the 18th and 19th centuries. There is also a wooden epitaph for Beate Louise Krumbach (1808–1822) with carved acanthus cheeks and a canopy in the Wetzenow church.

The organ with a neo-Gothic prospect was built in 1905 by Barnim Grüneberg from Stettin. The only existing church bell was cast in 1840, according to other information in 1880, by Carl Voss from Stettin.
