The Catholic Church of St. Otto in Pasewalk is a neo-Gothic hall church made of brick from the 19th century. The parish church belongs to the Deanery of Western Pomerania of the Archdiocese of Berlin .

history

In the 19th century only a few Catholics lived in the region around Pasewalk due to the Reformation . This gradually changed with the construction of the telegraph office and the construction of the railway. The pastoral initially took over a parish priest from Hoppenwalde that a district of today Eggesin is. From 1857 to 1858 lay lessons took place on the initiative of a family of officials in Pasewalk, which also included a service in the north chapel of St. Mary's Church . On November 18, 1860, the missionary priest Wilhelm Kraetzig took over the community. A year later, the church acquired a former brewery at Marktstrasse 8. The kiln for the malt was converted into a chapel and a living room as a classroom. In addition, apartments were built for teachers and clergy. The first service took place on August 25, 1861; a few weeks later they received permission to build a Catholic private school.

Construction of today's church began in 1882. The church was consecrated on May 19, 1885 by the prince-bishop's delegate Johannes Maria Assmann from Berlin. The patronage commemorates St. Otto von Bamberg , the "Apostle of Pomerania". In the following years the number of parishioners increased, so that on May 4, 1891 the mission parish was raised to a regular parish. In 1913 the west wall of the building was broken through in order to relocate the chancel to the place that is still present today. Ten years later, the master painter Ruschin designed the chancel in color. In 1925 the congregation acquired the painting Crucifixion Group . In 1929 the church was renovated by the church painter Schutow from Bingen am Rhein .

The community was also affected by the time of National Socialism . On October 13, 1938, the Catholic elementary school was closed ; on April 14, 1941, the Secret State Police confiscated the parish library. In connection with the Stettin case , on February 5, 1943, priests in the deanery were denounced . The tower was hit in an air raid on April 25, 1945; the window above the altar was completely destroyed, the other windows badly damaged. The building envelope was renovated from 2008 to 2011, and the interior has been renewed since October 2013. Among other things, the bench heating is to be supplemented by convection heating . The plaster in the interior is very damp and should also be renewed.
