Pomeranian Evangelical Church District

The Evangelical Church of Pomerania district , just Kirchenkreis Pomerania , arose at Pentecost in 2012 as part of the re-establishment of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany ( "North Church"). The three provosts (Demmin, Pasewalk and Stralsund) of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District were formed from the four former church districts (Demmin, Greifswald , Pasewalk and Stralsund ) of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church .

Geographical location

The Pomeranian Church District includes almost within the historical limits the part of Western Pomerania , which remained with Germany, of the former Prussian province of Pomerania , which today forms the eastern part of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . There are also several parishes of the former Pasewalk parish in the state of Brandenburg , which historically also belonged to Pomerania. In the east, the Oder-Neisse border forms the border with the diocese of Wroclaw of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland .

history

The Reformation , which was introduced by the Landtag zu Treptow an der Rega in 1534 , spread from the cities . The reformer Johannes Bugenhagen was entrusted with the drafting of a church ordinance. First three, later two general superintendents were appointed. Jacob Runge , who was the spiritual director of Pommern-Wolgast , developed a new church order and created a collection of confessional documents, the Corpus doctrinae Pomeranica . From 1827 the whole of Pomerania was only a general superintendent. After the Second World War, the “Pomeranian Evangelical Church” only comprised Western Pomerania and since 1947 has been led by a bishop. Until 1945 the church province of Pomerania still consisted of 52 church districts. In 1997, as part of a structural reform, the number was reduced to four church districts, each with a superintendent. With the formation of the “Northern Church” in 2012, the “Pomeranian Evangelical Church” became part of the Pomeranian parish.

Structure and tasks

The Pomeranian Evangelical Church District, together with the Evangelical Lutheran Church District of Mecklenburg, forms the " Sprengel Mecklenburg and Pomerania". For a transitional period there were two bishops in this district: Andreas von Maltzahn in Schwerin and Hans-Jürgen Abromeit in Greifswald, since 2019 there is only one joint, currently Tilman Jeremias . The church district of Pomerania is divided into three administrative districts, the provosts of Stralsund, Demmin and Pasewalk. The church district is managed by three bodies: the district synod, the church district council and the provosts. The administrative seat of the church district is Greifswald.

District Synod

The parishes are represented by the synod of the church district. Its 66 members decide on the budget, the regulations and the establishment plan and decide on the institutions of the church district. The district synod elects the provosts of their church district. The present president is Elke König .

District Church Council

The district church council consists of 13 members, the three provosts as born members and ten representatives who are elected by the district synod. The district church council oversees the parishes, their services and works as well as the administration of the church district. He prepares the drafts for the district synod and is responsible for the implementation of the decisions. The pastors are appointed by the district council.

Toast

The Stralsund provostess and provosts from Demmin and Pasewalk lead the church district together. They accompany and supervise the pastors, represent the church district in public and church life and have special powers.

Parishes

A total of 154 parishes belong to the Pomeranian parish, which are divided between the provosts Demmin (46), Pasewalk (53) and Stralsund (55).

Church district institutions

With the formation of the “Northern Church” a new “Regional Center for Church Services” was created. In the area of diakonia there are 829 facilities with more than 11,000 employees. There are also pastoral and educational offers.
