Ármannsfell is a mountain in the southwest of Iceland . It reaches a height of 768 meters.

Surname

Legends attribute the name of the mountain to one of the first settlers, who was called Ármann. He was half human, half troll and eventually died in the mountain.

location

The mountain is located in Nationalparkingvellir National Park . If you drive out from there in the direction of the highland slopes Uxarhryggur and Kaldidalur , the partially eroded tabular volcano is north of the road.

The road, which has become a piste, crosses the pass between the Ármannsfell and the Lágafell (538) mountain, which is connected to it via the Tröllháls pass, and then slopes steeply to the Sandkluftavatn lake . This lake, which sometimes almost dries up in summer, is located on the northeast side of the mountain.

geology

The mountain consists largely of palagonite and was formed under an ice age glacier. The uppermost layers of the tabular volcano are made of olivine basalt .

It belongs to the volcanic system of the central volcano Hrafnabjörg , which is opposite it on the other side of the Þingvellir rift.

However, there is also a crevice that can be traced back to the continental drift and which is typically parallel to the Þingvellir rift and thus to the rift zone. Their orientation is accordingly from northeast to southwest.

Hiking on the Ármannsfell

Numerous hiking trails lead up the mountain. For example, you can climb the ledges that lead from the path to Uxarhryggur up the mountain.
