The Jakobsweg Melk – Persenbeug is a 31-kilometer signposted section of the Jakobsweg network on the Jakobsweg Austria in the Nibelungengau in the southern Waldviertel in Lower Austria .

Also known as the Southern Way of St. James Waldviertel designated portion of the Austrian Camino de Santiago joins the Way of St. James Gottweig Melk in Lower Austria conservation area Wachau and leads from the UNESCO - World Heritage Melk in the town of Melk in the Mostviertel over the Danube bridge first to Emmersdorf in the southern forest district.

North of the Danube, the Way of St. James runs largely on existing bike and hiking trails, for example from Emmersdorf to Urfahr and from Marbach an der Donau to Gottsdorf on the Danube Cycle Path and from Leiben to Maria Taferl on circular path 22 ( Ysper - Weitental ).

The Way of St. James leads through six communities in the Melk district in the southern Waldviertel, ends at the Ybbs-Persenbeug power plant or the Danube bridge and continues on another signposted route south of the Danube in the Mostviertel to the Lower Austrian - Upper Austrian border at Sankt Pantaleon-Erla .

description

After leaving Melk Abbey and after crossing the Danube, the Way of St. James in the southern Waldviertel initially runs up the Danube along the banks of the Danube past Emmersdorf, Luberegg Castle and Weitenegg to Urfahr, a place in the municipality of Leiben, on the Danube Cycle Path and then after crossing the Danube Street and Donauuferbahn on a hiking trail via Leiben to Artstetten with Artstetten Castle and on to the pilgrimage site of Maria Taferl . The path then leads back into the Danube Valley to Marbach an der Donau and from there along the Danube to Gottsdorf and Persenbeug .

Project

The signposting of the Way of St. James in the southern Waldviertel was carried out by a project of the eco region Südliches Waldviertel in cooperation with the affected communities Emmersdorf, Leiben, Artstetten, Maria Taferl, Marbach and Persenbeug-Gottsdorf as well as the Persenbeuger local group of friends of nature . The Lower Austrian hiking trail concept was used as the basis for the new signs. The Way of St. James was marked with the Europe-wide uniform Jacob star with symbolized scallop in blue with yellow stripes.
