description

The Way of St. James runs from Stift Göttweig down the slope to Aigen, crosses the railway line, follows sunken paths over a plateau past Furth near Göttweig and through vineyards reaches Mautern on the Danube , where it receives pilgrims from the Way of St. James in Weinviertel .

From Mauternbach to the Ferdinandswarte the path climbs steeply. A section of the Roman road has been preserved there. The Way of St. James divides from Unterbergern into a path via Maria Langegg or via Oberbergern and then reunites through the Dunkelsteinerwald . On the way you pass Illyrian - Celtic barrows (seven graves), the Schoberstein with the Herrnplatzl, the Kreuzberg with a good panoramic view and the moon sculpture.

The Way of St. James leads from Maria Langegg on the signposted long-distance hiking trail 653 to the Aggstein castle ruins and then down into the valley to Aggsbach Dorf with Hammerschmiede and Aggsbach Charterhouse . From Wolfsteingraben you continue to Wolfstein , through the Raintal to Gerolding and via Hohenwarth to Schönbühel on the Danube with Schönbühel Castle and Monastery from the 17th century. The last part of the Way of St. James goes steeply uphill to Hub (community Schönbühel-Aggsbach) with a view of Melk Abbey . Passing the Pielach estuary and the Steinwandleiten, the Way of St. James reaches Melk Abbey.
