Guide to the World Heritage Trail

The World Heritage Trail is a 180 km long long- distance hiking trail in the Wachau . The path runs as a circular route on both banks of the Danube .

Route

World Heritage Trail near Spitz (Danube)

The World Heritage Trail begins and ends in Krems an der Donau . First of all, the path runs along the northern bank of the Danube via Dürnstein and Weißenkirchen to Spitz . Here the path leaves the Danube and follows the Spitzer Graben to Mühldorf , in order to climb the Jauerling from there . Via Maria Laach it goes back to the Danube to Aggsbach Markt and Emmersdorf .

The hiking trail crosses the Danube on the dam of the Danube power station Melk and leads on the south bank to Melk to the famous Benedictine monastery . The World Heritage Trail then runs through the Dunkelsteinerwald via Schönbühel an der Donau and Aggsbach Dorf to the Aggstein castle ruins . In the further course, the path reaches Hofarnsdorf and Rossatz , before finally reaching the Göttweig Benedictine Abbey via Oberbergern .

Finally, the World Heritage Trail leads over Mautern and the Danube Bridge to Stein and back to the starting point in Krems.

At all junctions, yellow signs show the direction.

  • Stage 1: From Krems to Dürnstein. 12.4 km, 490 meters in altitude , 4:30 hours
  • Stage 2: From Dürnstein to Weißenkirchen. 16.0 km 736 vertical meters, 6:00 hours
  • Stage 3: From Weißenkirchen to Spitz. 10.5 km, 503 meters in altitude, 4:00 hours
  • Stage 4: From Spitz to Mühldorf (Spitzer Graben). 11.3 km, 496 vertical meters, 4:00 hours
  • Stage 5: From Mühldorf over the Jauerling to Maria Laach. 12.8 km, 808 meters in altitude, 5:30 hours
  • Stage 6: From Maria Laach to Aggsbach Markt. 7.1 km, 81 meters in altitude, 2:15 hours
  • Stage 7: From Aggsbach Markt to Emmersdorf. 14.6 km, 562 meters in altitude, 5:00 hours
  • Stage 8: From Emmersdorf to Melk. 9.2 km, 209 vertical meters, 3:00 hours
  • Stage 9: From Melk to Aggsbach Dorf. 16.8 km, 539 meters in altitude, 6:00 hours
  • Stage 10: From Aggsbach Dorf to Hofarnsdorf. 16.2 km, 731 vertical meters, 5:30 hours
  • Stage 11: From Hofarnsdorf to Rossatz. 16.8 km, 741 vertical meters, 6:30 hours
  • Stage 12: From Rossatz to Oberbergern. 11.6 km, 410 vertical meters, 4:00 hours
  • Stage 13: From Oberbergern to Mautern. 16.7 km, 350 meters in altitude, 5:00 hours
  • Stage 14: From Mautern to Krems. 3.9 km, 52 vertical meters, 1:00 hours

There is also the possibility of shortening the entire route from 14 to 12 stages by walking on a stage of the Jauerling circuit between Spitz and Aggsbach-Markt. This means that the Hinterhaus castle ruins and the place where Venus von Willendorf was found can also be visited.

Name and story

World Heritage Trail near Göttweig

The name of the World Heritage Trail is a reminder that the Wachau was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 (world cultural and natural heritage).

The World Heritage Trail mostly uses the routes of existing hiking trails. The marking maintenance is the responsibility of the Austrian Alpine Club and the Austrian Tourist Club . The World Heritage Trail was officially opened on May 26, 2010.
