Schönbühel an der Donau is a village (332 inhabitants in 2015) and a cadastral municipality of the market town of Schönbühel-Aggsbach in the Melk district in Lower Austria .

history

In the 9th century, the area around Schönbühel belonged to the Diocese of Passau . In 1396 the diocese of Passau sold it as free property to the Lords of Starhemberg , who were the lords of the castle at Schönbühel until 1819 . The place emerged as a castle settlement at the foot of the hilltop and was first mentioned in documents in 1358. In 1666, the lord of the castle, Count Conrad Balthasar von Starhemberg, donated the Servite monastery, which was built a little further down the Danube instead of a former pleasure palace.

Schönbühel belonged to the Gerolding parish . The castle chapel, built in 1064, served as a branch church. After Schönbühel became an independent parish in 1668/69, the castle chapel initially served as the parish church. In 1786 the parish rights were transferred to the church of the Schönbühel monastery .

By the beginning of the 19th century at the latest, the castle was in a desolate state, so that only the high tower, the already desecrated church and the attached wing with three round towers could be seen. In 1819 the Starhemberg sold the property to Count Franz Beroldingen , who had the castle largely renovated. In 1927 the Counts Seilern and Aspang acquired Gut Schönbühel, which they currently own (2018).

The former municipality of Schönbühel on the Danube became the market municipality of Schönbühel-Aggsbach in 1969 through the merger with Aggsbach Dorf .
