The Austrian Way of St. James is a partially signposted, 750 to 800 km long main branch of the Way of St. James in Austria .

Irrespective of regional deviations in terms of route guidance, this is essentially based on the research results of Peter Lindenthal , published for the first time in 1999 .

The signposting and tourist marketing of sections of the Austrian Way of St. James mostly go back to private and public initiatives, whereby regional development projects and funding associations usually ensure that the necessary financial resources are raised. Stimuli for local and regional economic development are expected from the revitalization of the St. James pilgrimage routes in Austria.

description

Lindenthal crossed Austria on the Jakobsroute described by him in 28 detailed daily stages from Pressburg ( Slovakia ) at the Hainburger Pforte Danube upwards along the former Danube Limesstrasse through Vienna , via Linz and Innsbruck to Feldkirch in an east-west direction.

The author describes a continuous hiking route on or parallel to the medieval Way of St. James, which tries to combine authenticity, accessibility and pilgrimage. Quieter forest and field paths are used where old paths have been turned into busy roads. In addition to the numerous Jakobskirchen, local or national pilgrimage sites are also visited.

On the way, the Austrian Way of St. James takes on further branches of the Way of St. James, for example:

From Feldkirch there are still about one hundred kilometers to travel to Maria Einsiedeln in Switzerland before the Austrian Way of St. James joins the Central European pilgrimage route, the so-called Oberstraße. This section of the route was signposted and described as part of the cross-border Leader + project Jakobsweg Landeck – Einsiedeln .

Sections of the Austrian Way of St. James

Individual sections of the Austrian Way of St. James have been signposted as part of regional public and private projects and are advertised for tourism, whereby in this context relevant literature including route maps and route descriptions is also available:

Burgenland

The Jakobsweg Burgenland , which runs from Frauenkirchen to Haslau-Maria Ellend , is the only signposted Jakobsweg in Burgenland. It leaves Burgenland near Bruckneudorf and leads the last few kilometers to the confluence with the Austrian Way of St. James over Lower Austria. In Halbturn this path takes on a variant of the Hungarian Way of St. James coming from Lébény.

Lower Austria

The Way of St. James is not continuously marked in Lower Austria and Vienna, as the initiative for signposting is left to regional associations and communities.

Upper Austria

The section of the Austrian Way of St. James leading through Upper Austria essentially follows the old Roman and trade routes from Enns / Lorch to Salzburg . It begins at Mauthausen or Enns and divides in the central area of Linz into a northern and a southern part. The two parts meet again in Hörsching and cross the border to Salzburg at Oberhofen am Irrsee . The path was created in a cooperation between the Diocese of Linz , Upper Austria and Upper Austria. Signs for tourism. There is a network of pilgrims' hostels and relevant information material.

In Upper Austria, the Jakobsweg runs through the upper Mühlviertel and the Jakobsweg Mühlviertel-Ost, parts of the Jakobspilgernetz, which leads from Poland to the Danube and from there either via the Innviertel Way of St. James or directly via the main route to Salzburg .
