The Way of St. James runs in Lower Austria's Mostviertel through the part of Strudengau south of the Danube from Ybbs over the Hengstberg and Neustadtler Platte as well as through the south of the Danube part of the Machland to the Lower Austrian-Upper Austrian border in the municipality of Sankt Pantaleon-Erla, from where the way is signposted both over the river Enns to the city of Enns and over the Mauthausen Danube bridges to the market town of Mauthausen .

The pilgrimage route crosses the Lower Austrian landscape protection area Strudengau and the surrounding area in the communities of Ybbs an der Donau , Sankt Martin-Karlsbach and Neustadtl an der Donau , the FFH area Strudengau - Nibelungengau and the European protected areas Machland Süd .

description

Starting from the Danube bridge at the Ybbs – Persenbeug power plant, the pilgrim route leads first to the municipal area of Ybbs an der Donau to the west for a while along the Danube, then to Marienhöhe and back to Scharlreith, from where the route heads west again along the slopes to the Danube as far as Grub in the municipality of Sankt Martin-Karlsbach is signposted.

The path now leads over the Hengstberg and through the village of the same name, past various farmsteads and reaches the market town of Neustadtl an der Donau near Willersbach , where the parish church is consecrated to St. James and a street is named after the apostle . On a local themed trail under the motto “The journey is the goal”, 13 stations provide information about the Way of St. James from Hainburg on the Austro- Hungarian border to Santiago de Compostela .

On the way to the abandoned Baroque Ardagger Abbey , the Way of St. James leads past the pilgrimage church in Kollmitzberg . The church is located on the highest point of the Kollmitzberg at 469  m above sea level. A. in the cadastral municipality of the same name in the market town of Ardagger and is known for the Kirtag , which attracts around 30,000 visitors every year.

The next destination is the Jakobskirche in Zeillern . In 2008, as part of the Zeillern rural youth project marathon, the Way of St. James was re-signposted in the municipality within 42 hours and equipped with an information board. The signposted path leaves Zeillern in the direction of Wallsee-Sindelburg and leads there first through Ort and then a piece along the Danube-Altarmweg to Strengberg , further into the municipality of Sankt Pantaleon-Erla to the Abbey of Erla (municipality of St. Pantaleon-Erla) and through the village Sankt Pantaleon, where the Way of St. James divides and in Upper Austria leads either north or south of the central Linz area via Mauthausen or Enns to Hörsching .
