Culture and sights

  • Parish church Kollmitzberg : The church in Kollmitzberg is consecrated to Saint Ottilia and was once a fortified church. It was first mentioned around 1260. In the late Middle Ages, thousands of believers made a pilgrimage to the Kollmitzberg every year, because the Ottilien water, which rises on the Kollmitzberg, is said to have a particularly healing effect, which is primarily intended to alleviate eye problems.

Because of the Kirtag , which is held every year in Kollmitzberg, the place is known far beyond the national borders. The roots of the Kirtag go back to the 13th century. In 2014 the Kirtag took place for the 498th time. It usually happens on the 3rd weekend in September. With around 30,000 visitors annually, it is one of the largest events of its kind in Austria. Originally this fair was held in Ardagger Stift, but in the lower regions of Ardagger the plague raged at that time and for this reason the fair, which at that time lasted two months, was moved to the Kollmitzberg, which had been spared from this epidemic.
