description

Great curlew
Singing Bluethroat

Machland Süd is located in the northwestern Mostviertel on the border with Upper Austria's Mühlviertel . The Grenerarm, an old arm of the Danube, flows through and divides the area. The relevant area is characterized by closed alluvial forests , fields and, to a lesser extent, meadows and orchards. Due to the relatively high proportion of near-natural habitats, a relatively large number of endangered animal species can be found.

The area allocated to the Machland Süd protected area is around 1700 hectares. Of this, around 1670 hectares are designated as FFH areas and around 1230 hectares as bird sanctuaries. The protected areas are located at an altitude of 210  m above sea level. A. up to 260  m above sea level A. and comprise closed alluvial forest areas and large, extensively managed wet meadows . Eight habitat types, twenty-one bird species and sixteen other species are protected .

Machland Süd is one of the most important breeding sites for meadow birds in Lower Austria and at the same time the last larger meadow breeding area in the Danube Valley. The area is also very important as a resting place for migratory birds , especially water birds . The islands and gravel banks are attractive resting places.

More than 57 square kilometers of low and Upper Austria Machland were due to its international importance for birds of BirdLife Austria for Important Bird Area declared (IBA).

Among other things, the curlew and the singing bluethroat have the largest distribution in Austria in the region.

The protected area is crossed by the Danube Cycle Path.

Large parts of the Machland in Lower Austria are no longer populated, as 60 farms in the floodplain of the Danube have been abandoned in the Ardagger municipal area, especially in the Stephanshart area, since the 1970s. The yards of the resettled residents were demolished.
