The nerds ( Zingel nerd ) is a species from the family of Real perch (Percidae). It occurs in the Danube and Vardar areas in fast flowing river areas.

features

Nerd are slender fish that have the elongated, round-spindle-shaped body with a thin tail stem, which is typical for the spindle perch . Their length is usually 12 to 18 centimeters, rarely up to 22 centimeters. The trunk is yellow to clay brown with wide, irregularly shaped, dark brown transverse bands and a light belly. The eyes are directed upwards, the mouth is underneath and covered with numerous brush teeth. The scales lie firmly against the body, along the lateral line organ are 70 to 81 small comb scales. The fins are yellowish and without markings. The first dorsal fin has eight or nine hard rays and is separated by a clear gap from the second dorsal fin with a hard ray and 12 or 13 soft rays. The pectoral fins have no hard and 14 soft rays, the large ventral fins have one hard ray and six soft rays. The anal fin has 11 to 13, the caudal fin 17 soft rays. The swim bladder has completely receded.

At spawning time, the animals are strikingly brass-colored and the females look very strong.

Way of life

Nerd live in small groups. They are nocturnal inhabitants of the bottom area of fast flowing waters, who hide during the day in rubble or self-made pits. The food, consisting of small crustaceans, worms and insect larvae, is found swimming jerkily over the bottom at night and often jumping with the pectoral and pelvic fins. The eyes can be moved independently of each other and the head angled slightly to the side.

The spawning season is in March and April. The sticky eggs, about 2 millimeters in size, are placed in the gaps of gravel banks.

They can reach an age of five or more years.

Duration

The nerd is rare in the entire distribution area. Its habitat is threatened by pollution, existing transverse structures (weirs) and new constructions, as it is dependent on clean, fast-flowing waters. The species is listed in Appendix III of the Bern Convention , and the species is listed as not endangered in the IUCN Red List .
