The Percoidei are a subordination of the perch-like (Perciformes). The distinction of the Percoidei from the other suborders of the perch-like is based on bone elements in the skull, which in the Percoidei are not connected to one another, but are fused in the other suborders. However, this is seen as a primordial feature ( plesiomorphism ). Since a common primeval trait does not establish any closer relationship in the sense of modern phylogenetic systematics , the use of this taxon (in the traditional scope) is increasingly being abandoned. In the revision of the bony fish classification by Betancur-R. et al. (2013) the taxon is redefined, see below .
The group of percoidei (traditional size) includes a number of well-known and popular food fish, but also many popular aquarium fish.

Systematics (phylogenetic)
At Betancur-R. et al. (2013) the suborder Percoidei is defined much more narrowly than the Percidae with their closest relatives (approx. 250 species):
-
Subordination Percoidei
- Real perch (Percidae)
- Niphonidae ( monotypic )
- Weever (Trachinidae)
