The salmon perch ( Arripis ) are a genus of perch relatives (Percomorphaceae). They stand alone in the monogenic family Arripidae, some authors also write Arripididae. As the fish reminded the first European settlers of European salmon , they were called Australian Salmon. There is no relationship to the salmon. The fish are marine and live in the southwestern Pacific in the area of South Australia , New Zealand , Lord Howe Island , the Norfolk Island and the Kermadec Islands . They live in shallow water near the coast, often over Neptune grasses ( Posidonia ), and also go into the brackish water of the estuaries. Salmon bass feed on smaller fish and pelagic crustaceans . They are popular fishing fish.
