The Mojarras (Gerreidae) are a family of perch-related fish, with over 50 species mainly found in tropical and subtropical seas. Many species also go into brackish water , and some swim up rivers. Eugerres mexicanus lives exclusively in fresh water in southern Mexico and northern Guatemala .

features

Mojarras are small to medium-sized, silvery fish with a pointed-nosed, protractile mouth that can be pulled forward and feed on invertebrates that live on the ground. Depending on the species, they reach lengths of 6.5 centimeters to half a meter. Its head is almost completely scaled, but the top is smooth. The bases of the dorsal and anal fins are also scaled and form high sheaths in which the fins can be put back. The scales are usually cycloid . The dorsal fin is supported by nine to ten hard and 9 to 17 soft rays. The caudal fin is deeply split. There is a small axillary process above the pelvic fins . Mojarras have 24 vertebrae.
