The nature reserve Schanzberge bei Brietzig is an 8 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania between Strasburg and Pasewalk not far east of Starkshof in the municipality of Brietzig . It was placed under protection in 1957 with the aim of protecting and developing an impressive, structurally rich landscape with oat lawns and warmth-loving bushes. The area extends over a kilometer from northeast to southwest as a long ridge.

The current state of the area is assessed as satisfactory. Nutrients are brought in from the surrounding agricultural areas. Furthermore, the areas are only sporadically grazed with sheep.

There are no public roads in the area. Information boards about the area are in parking lots on the B 104 and on the way from Brietzig to Starkshof.

history

The nature reserve is part of the Wilsickower Osgruppe, which was created during the Ice Age and extends over 2.5 kilometers. The sandy ridge was grazed with sheep and goats from the Middle Ages until the 19th century. After grazing was abandoned, deciduous and coniferous trees were planted and the area was forested. In the past decades, bushes have been removed from time to time in order to keep part of the area open. Sand and gravel were mined in various places.
