The Mümmelkensee is located about 2.3 kilometers northwest of Bansin in the municipality of Heringsdorf in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district . The lake, surrounded by forest, is located about 1 kilometer northeast of the Schmollensee . The name goes back to the Mummel , the yellow pond rose ( Low German Mümmelken ).

This body of water is the scour of a boiler moor . The open water surface takes up about 3300 square meters, usually the size of the lake is given as about 1 hectare. The lake was created at the end of the Vistula Ice Age within a moraine from a block of dead ice . In the valley without drainage, a raised bog was created that was only fed by precipitation. A layer of peat formed , which is 4 meters thick at the edge and 15 meters in the interior of the depression. There is swinging lawn on the banks . The Mümmelkensee is one of the few uncultivated bogs in Pomerania , it has never been drained and not used for peat extraction.

natural reserve

In 1957 the Mümmelkensee with a 6 hectare surrounding area was placed under nature protection by the council of the Rostock district . Very rare liverworts , cotton grasses , swamp porosity , bladder rush and long and round-leaved sundew occur in the area. Breeding birds in the area are kingfisher , crane , greylag goose and little grebe . The state of the area is assessed as good. A hiking trail with explanatory information boards leads from Bansin into the protected area. There is also a refuge on the northeast slope and an observation tower on the edge of the moor. The Island of Usedom Nature Park offers regular guided tours in the area.
