Beech forest in winter

The Klepelshagen nature reserve is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania eight kilometers north of Strasburg . The protection took place on July 15, 1957 with an area expansion in 1961, so that the current area comprises 301 hectares. A wooded section of a terminal moraine is to be preserved, which is made up of pearl grass beech forest and houses warmth-loving plant species and shows relics of earlier forest management.

According to EU law, the areas are part of the FFH area of Brohmer Berge forest and small water bodies and the Brohmer Berge bird sanctuary .

The state of the area is considered to be good. About half the beech population is over 100 years old.

There are several public roads in the area. The areas have been looked after by the German Wildlife Foundation since 1995 .

History and water balance

The areas are embedded in the terminal moraine of the Brohmer Mountains , which were formed during the last Ice Age . The sequence of walls pushed up by the ice advances is found every 200 meters. In the southern area of today's nature reserve, kettle bogs emerged from dead ice forms . The Knüppelbach, which drains into Lake Galenbeck, runs through the nature reserve from south to north . Klepelshagen has been a forest site for at least 500 years. The partially fortified border between Mecklenburg and Pomerania ran through today's nature reserve. Remnants of the old land defense system are preserved as a double wall-ditch system up to 14 meters wide . Due to the location in the three-state corner between Brandenburg, Mecklenburg and Pomerania, there were frequent armed conflicts until 1479.

The forest belonged to Gut Klepelshagen and was managed as a high forest.

Flora and fauna

Pearl grass beech forest is the dominant form of vegetation in the nature reserve. Interspersed grow in warmer locations serviceberry , Bellflower and vaginal gold star . The kettle bogs have been preserved in various good conditions. In places there are still manifestations with cotton grass. The Kesselmoore is mostly surrounded by an alder forest .

The nature reserve offers habitat for fire-bellied toad , tree frog and moor frog .

In June 2009 the GEO Day of Biodiversity took place in Klepelshagen. Around 1800 species have been observed. Black tern , wryneck , black and green woodpecker , oriole , red kite and crane are all worth mentioning among the 96 bird species recorded. In addition, 170 types of fungus were found, including slime molds and ashes .
