Rothes Moor nature reserve near Wesenberg

The Rothes Moor nature reserve near Wesenberg is an 81 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, three kilometers east of Wesenberg . It was placed under protection on March 2, 1972 with the aim of protecting and developing a peat bog with a large area of water as an important breeding and resting area for numerous bird species.

The current state of the area is assessed as satisfactory. Renaturation measures of the last few years, which should lead to an increase in the water level, have so far only been marginally successful. The water is still being fished illegally.

There are no paths in the protected area, so it is not possible to enter. A forest path in the east offers insights into the areas.

History and water balance

The nature reserve is located in an ice age sand landscape . The Rothe Moor was created as an excavation by glacial ice. The initially open water surface was moored with a swampy bog , but was flooded in the more humid boreal and covered by limestone muds up to 2 meters thick. This body of water also silted up and a 20 hectare Kesselmoor could grow up. In the 19th century, the lake that was originally without any outflow was drained to the north and the lake level was lowered. Silting processes accelerated and woody plants could migrate into the areas. Small areas of peat were cut. There is currently a 250-meter-long moor lake in the central part of the protected area, which is surrounded by suspended ceilings and trees.

Flora and fauna

Numerous rare species, especially orchids , have disappeared since the lake level fell. The suspended ceilings are made up of peat moss , sedges , ledges , rosemary heather , comb fern and dwarf hedgehog cob . Cotton grass , downy birch and round-leaved sundew grow scattered . On the land side, pipe grass , sprouting bear moss , German honeysuckle , resin bedstraw , broad-leaved thorn fern as well as scrub forests with alder and pine adjoin the mineral soil . In the area are fish and sea eagles before. Breeding birds are the little grebes , common snipes and woodcock . The otter lives in the area. The occurrence of the adder is also worth highlighting .
