Zerrinsee nature reserve near Qualzow

The Zerrinsee nature reserve near Qualzow is a 32 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , four kilometers northeast of Mirow . It is named after the former Zerrinsee and the northern part of Qualzow . It was placed under protection on March 2, 1972 with the purpose of protecting and developing a swamp moor in the lowland of a drained lake as a habitat for rare animal and plant species.

The state of the area is classified as unsatisfactory, as the low water levels in the bog cause woody plants to spread and thus accelerate the drainage of the bog. There are no public roads in the area.

History and water balance

The nature reserve is located in an ice age sand landscape . The Zerrinsee originally covered an area of 20 hectares, as can still be seen on the Schmettauschen map from 1788. In the 19th century, extensive lowering of the water level by 1.5 meters led to the lake falling dry, which was then mossed and used as grassland . The areas are currently not cultivated.

Flora and fauna

The moor vegetation of the protected area, consisting of peat moss , common cranberries , mud sedge , round-leaved sundew and bladder rush , has been displaced by pines and is only found in rudimentary areas in non-forest areas. Moor frogs and forest lizards live in the areas. Breeding birds in the area are robins , warblers , wren , snipe , teal , spotted rail and crane .
