The Großer Schwerin and Steinhorn nature reserve is a 415 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, northeast of Röbel . It was placed under protection on July 3, 1930 with two extensions in 1972 and 1975. The nature reserve is divided into the Großer Schwerin peninsula , the Zahnerlank bay belonging to Müritz and the high bank of the Steinhorn peninsula. The protection goal is the preservation of water and grazed grassland areas as an important resting place for water birds as well as a steep coast covered with forest.

The current state of the area is considered to be good. Undisturbed forest development is possible on the Steinhorn. The importance of the areas as resting places has increased in recent years. Due to strong predator pressure, however, the breeding success of the Limikolen decreased .

The area can only be entered from July to December. The bird world can be observed very well from a hill near Gneve. An information board provides information about the area there.

history

Conservation work in the area in 1979

The two peninsulas of the protected area go back to ice age deferrals. The Great Schwerin was originally a wooded island. Regulatory work on the Elde and Havel in the years 1798 to 1837 led to a drop in the water level of the Müritz by about 1.5 meters, creating a land bridge. The forest was cleared and the area was used as pasture. A herd of suckler cows grazes the area nowadays in accordance with nature conservation, so that the landscape is kept open.

Flora and fauna

Various types of orchid bloom in the grassland areas, including broad-leaved orchid . The Steinhörn peninsula is planted with beech forest . Particularly noteworthy bird species are greylag goose , crane , bittern , red-necked grebe , spotted rail , common tern , bearded and baguette tit , kingfisher , various types of duck , common snipe , lapwing , pond warbler and little ringed plover .
