Grundloser See nature reserve near Ahrensberg

The Grundloser See nature reserve near Ahrensberg is a 44-hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania four kilometers east of Wesenberg . It is named after the four hectare lake in the western part of the protected area and the village of Ahrensberg not far south. It was placed under protection on March 2, 1972 with the purpose of protecting and developing a nutrient-poor lake with a moor and a bog forest adjacent to the east - the Postbruch. The area was expanded in 1994.

The current state of the area is assessed as satisfactory. The bottomless lake is regularly used by anglers, which leads to nutrient inputs and damage from being stepped on.

History and water balance

The nature reserve is located in an ice age sand landscape. The Grundlose See was created as an excavation by flowing melt water. There are dunes in the area that were formed immediately after the Ice Age and were last exposed and reshaped during a deforestation period in the Middle Ages. The seven-meter-deep Grundlose See mossed over time and formed suspended ceilings, which today are up to 50 meters wide. It is fed exclusively by rainwater, which makes it very poor in nutrients. The banks of the lake were planted with trees in the 18th century. The Postbruch was traversed with ditches in the 19th century and has been draining towards the Havel ever since. In the originally wood-free lowland, there was forest cover with pine, alder and birch. A one-time use took place in 1998 due to unauthorized felling of the area.

Flora and fauna

The Grundlose See is one of the now rare nutrient-poor and acidic lakes. The underwater vegetation from 3 to 6 meters water depth is occupied by Braunmoos - Drepanocladus exannulatus . Peat moss and common pennywort grow from the edges of the suspended ceiling up to a depth of 3 meters into the lake. Typical plant species on the rocking bog are also dog ostrich grass , swamp blood-eye , thread sedge , fever clover , sundew , swamp porst and cranberry . A peat moss and birch forest adjoins it towards the shore. Swamp porst and sprouting bear moss grow in the Postbruch . Most of the quarry is covered with birch , alder and pine .

The white-tailed eagle breeds in the area. There are also rare dragonfly species, such as the pygmy dragonfly , the eastern moss damsel , the little moss damsel , the little pitch dragonfly , the little rush damsel , the moor damsel and the green damsel .
