The Nonnenhof nature reserve is a 1,049 hectare nature reserve near the city of Neubrandenburg in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The protection efforts apply particularly to the bird breeding and resting area and the preservation of botanical rarities. Due to the regular flooding of the Nonnenhof peninsula, swamp and large sedge alder forests were created here. The banks of the Lieps are lined in parts by reeds and reeds and there is a species-rich floating leaf corridor. Common snipe , woodcock , quail and corncrake , kingfishers , cranes , gray herons and cormorants , a total of 170 bird species, are among the breeding birds in the nature reserve. The peninsula and the banks are feeding grounds for sea eagles and ospreys as well as black storks . Otters and various bat species are part of the rich fauna of the lake. At the time of the bird migration, up to 17,000 white geese and white-tailed geese as well as various species of ducks rest here . Moulting collections of up to 3000 gray geese find a protected retreat on the Lieps.
The Nonnenhof nature reserve is part of an important inland bird sanctuary that has been recognized as a "European bird sanctuary" since 1988.
All private boat traffic, diving and fishing is prohibited on the lake. Only passenger ships operate between Neubrandenburg and Prillwitz in the burned-out area on the Lieps .

The state of the area is considered to be good. Impairments come from nutrient inputs from the neighboring agricultural areas, which are bound by the existing strong influx of calcareous groundwater. The forest areas in the area are not subject to forest use. A holiday complex with Swedish houses is being built directly on the nature reserve between the Lieps and the south-eastern shore of Lake Tollensee .

Together with the Nonnenhof nature reserve, the surrounding nature reserves Ziemenbachtal , Hellberge , Nonnenbachtal and Rosenholz and Zippelower Bachtal form a representative section of the landscape of the upper Tollensebecken.
